Manorhaven Elementary Hosts Award-Winning Author Amy McCoy for Disability Awareness Month

Manorhaven Elementary School recently welcomed award-winning author Amy B. McCoy as part of its celebration of Disability Awareness Month. The visit was made possible through a Hearts PW grant, "Appreciating Disability and Diversity with Author Amy McCoy."

McCoy, renowned for her Little Big Sister book series, presented her program, "Appreciate Disabilities and Diversity," to students. The series is written from the perspective of a sibling of a boy with autism and highlights themes of self-awareness, social consciousness, and the power of kindness. Through her presentation, McCoy inspired students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of peers with disabilities while also exploring the writing process and the impact of compassionate actions in schools and communities.

In addition to schoolwide assemblies, McCoy held special Q&A sessions with third-grade classes, who have been reading her book as a read-aloud. The interactive discussions allowed students to connect with the author and delve deeper into the themes of her work.

The visit was a powerful reminder of the importance of promoting empathy, inclusivity, and understanding in our school community.
