The Port Washington School District is proud to announce that Cal Gober, a senior midfielder at Paul D. Schreiber High School, has been honored with the James C. Metzger Leadership Award. This annual accolade recognizes exceptional leadership qualities exhibited by high school lacrosse players throughout Nassau County.
The James C. Metzger Leadership Award is presented to one outstanding player from each of the eight teams that competed in the finals of the highly anticipated 2023 Section VIII Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse championships. These recipients exemplify the core values of Nassau lacrosse, including tenacity, honesty, commitment, and a positive attitude both on and off the field.
Cal Gober's unwavering dedication to his sport and his community truly set him apart. As a senior midfielder, Cal consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, inspiring his teammates to reach their full potential. His commitment to excellence, coupled with his remarkable work ethic, has made him a role model for aspiring young lacrosse players.
"Cal demonstrates attributes that we want all of our student-athletes to possess. A two-sport athlete, who puts the team above himself," said Nick Schratwieser, Athletic Director for Port Washington. "I could not be prouder of what Cal has accomplished as a Port Washington Viking. He is a role model and example for future generations of student-athletes."
Cal's ability to inspire and uplift others, both on and off the field, makes him a deserving recipient of the James C. Metzger Leadership Award. Coach Isaac Neal further attests to Cal's exceptional character, stating, "Cal is the epitome of a “we guy”. A true two-way middie, Cal sells out for the team on all sides of the ball. He’s a leader by example, and always leaves it all on the field."
