The saying is true, you can’t truly understand someone unless you walk a mile in their shoes or in this case… switch bodies with them for a day. Freaky Friday, based on the 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers and three movie adaptations (1973, 1995, and 2003), shares what happens when teenage daughter Ellie (played by 8th grader Sophie Sobel) switches bodies with her mother Katherine (played by 7th grader Addison Craig) after getting into an argument. The musical follows their chaotic yet enlightening day as they navigate each other’s lives, dealing with school, relationships, and personal challenges. Through humorous and touching moments, both Katherine and Ellie learn to appreciate and understand each other’s perspectives, ultimately strengthening their bond as they work together to reverse the body swap before it becomes permanent. The musical explores themes of empathy, understanding, and the complexities of family relationships while delivering catchy songs and an entertaining storyline.
Weber Middle School’s production of Freaky Friday is directed by Weber English teacher Mrs. Stacey Portmore-Davies, musically directed by Weber music teacher Mrs. Allison Friedman, and choreographed by Ms. Suz Dervish-Ali.
